Five years had passed since I lost my brother, Lucas. It felt like a lifetime ago, yet some days, the grief hit me like it had just happened yesterday. Losing him had torn a hole in my life, and I was still trying to piece things back together. My best friend, Zoe, had been there every step of the way, offering support and comfort when I needed it most. She had seen me at my lowest and helped me find the strength to keep going.

Zoe had always been a little more adventurous than me when it came to dating. She wasn’t afraid of meeting new people, especially online. I had always admired her confidence, though I preferred to keep my relationships a bit more private. Lately, Zoe had been telling me about a guy she had met on a dating app—his name was Ryan, and she seemed really excited about him.
“He’s so sweet, Kate!” Zoe said over the phone one afternoon. “We’ve been chatting for a while, and we’ve got a lot in common. I think he might be ‘the one.’”
I smiled, happy to hear my friend so excited. “That’s awesome, Zo. I’m glad you found someone who makes you feel that way.”
A few days later, Zoe texted me a picture of Ryan. “Check out my new guy!” the message read. “Isn’t he cute?”
I opened the photo and froze. The man in the picture was smiling, standing in a park with soft sunlight hitting his face. His dark hair was slightly messy, and his blue eyes were just like Lucas’s—so similar, in fact, that my heart skipped a beat. I stared at the photo, my hands trembling slightly.
I had to be imagining it. There was no way it could be him. It had been five years since Lucas passed away, and this guy in the picture couldn’t possibly be him.
I quickly put my phone down and tried to shake the feeling that had washed over me. Maybe I was just seeing things, maybe it was just someone with a similar look. But something about his smile—his eyes—was hauntingly familiar.
I texted Zoe back, trying to keep my tone light. “He looks great, Zo! Very handsome. Where did you guys meet?”
“We met on the app, but I swear, we’ve got a real connection,” Zoe replied. “I’m meeting him for coffee tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it goes.”
The next day, Zoe updated me after her date. “He’s amazing, Kate! I’m really excited about him,” she said. But there was a strange hesitation in her voice, something I couldn’t place.
“Sounds like it’s going well,” I replied, trying to keep the conversation casual.
“Yeah, but there’s something strange,” Zoe said, her voice lower now. “I asked him about his past, and he got really vague about it. He didn’t want to talk about his family. I thought that was odd.”
I felt a knot in my stomach. “Maybe he’s just private. Not everyone is open about their past.”
“I guess. But the more I talk to him, the more I feel like there’s something he’s not telling me. It’s like he’s hiding something.”
I didn’t want to overreact, but a little voice in my head kept reminding me of the picture she had sent me. It was too much of a coincidence. My brother’s smile, his eyes… I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right.
“Zo, can you send me another picture of Ryan? One from a different angle?” I asked, trying to sound casual but feeling the anxiety rising in me.
“Of course! Here you go,” she replied, sending me another photo.
I stared at it for a long time. This time, it wasn’t just his face that looked like Lucas—it was his entire presence. The way he held himself in the picture, the confidence in his posture, the way his lips curved into a smile. It felt like I was staring at my brother’s ghost.
I quickly called Zoe. “Zoe, I need to know something. I need you to be honest with me. Where did Ryan say he’s from?”
Zoe sounded confused. “Uh, he said he’s from here—well, not exactly from here, but he moved here a couple of years ago. Why?”
“Zoe, I need you to really think about this,” I said, my voice shaking. “I know this might sound crazy, but is it possible that this guy you’re seeing—Ryan—could be using pictures of someone else?”
“What do you mean?” she asked, her voice now worried.
“Look, I don’t want to freak you out, but that guy you’re dating—he looks just like my brother, Lucas. I’m serious, Zoe. The eyes, the smile, everything. I don’t think it’s a coincidence. I think he’s using Lucas’s pictures.”
There was a long silence on the other end of the line before Zoe spoke. “That’s insane. Are you sure, Kate? I mean, I didn’t even think of that, but now that you mention it…” Her voice trailed off.
“I know it sounds crazy, but please, Zoe. I need you to stop talking to him. I need you to promise me that.”
Zoe was quiet for a moment, but I could hear the wheels turning in her head. “Okay, okay. I’ll stop. But what do we do now?”
“I don’t know yet. But I’m going to find out who this guy really is. I have to.”
I hung up the phone, my mind racing. This wasn’t just a weird coincidence anymore. Zoe had been talking to someone who had used my brother’s pictures, and I had no idea why. Maybe it was a sick joke, or maybe there was something more sinister behind it. Either way, I wasn’t going to let it slide.
The next few days were a blur as I did everything I could to track down the man behind the pictures. I reached out to old friends of Lucas’s, people who might have known if he had a look-alike or if someone had been using his photos for some strange reason.
Eventually, I learned that the man Zoe had been talking to was, in fact, a friend of Lucas’s from high school. He had been going by the name Ryan but had used Lucas’s pictures without permission. When I confronted him, he admitted that he was simply trying to use the images to get attention on the dating app.
It was beyond unsettling. The fact that someone would use my brother’s photos to deceive someone was disturbing enough, but to think that Zoe had been falling for this man’s lies was heartbreaking.
In the end, Zoe was devastated when she learned the truth. But she was also grateful that we had figured it out before things had gone too far. It was a painful reminder of how much we could still be affected by the past, and how fragile trust can be.
