I had always known that love wasn’t supposed to be perfect, but when Kevin and I had been together for three years, everything felt like it was falling into place. ‘

It was the day of his big family gathering, an event he’d been planning for weeks.
It was a celebration of sorts—his parents’ anniversary, and his sister’s birthday.
I was excited because I knew this was the day Kevin had planned to propose.
He’d hinted at it multiple times, even picking out a stunning ring with my favorite gemstone. I couldn’t wait to say “yes.”
The setting was perfect—outdoors, with a beautiful sunset painting the sky in hues of orange and pink.
The guests had gathered in the backyard, chatting and enjoying drinks as we all waited for the cake to be brought out.
Kevin was standing by my side, looking dashing in his suit, but there was something about the way he kept glancing nervously at the door that made me uneasy.
I didn’t think much of it at first, figuring he was just trying to keep the element of surprise intact.
But then, I saw her.
Kara.
Kevin’s ex-girlfriend. She had been in his life before I came along, and I knew their breakup had been messy.
He’d never said much about her, but I knew enough to understand that their history wasn’t exactly pleasant.
Kara had shown up unexpectedly, just as the guests were starting to mingle, and Kevin greeted her with a tight-lipped smile.
There was an uncomfortable pause before he gestured for her to join the rest of the guests.
I watched them interact from a distance, trying to shake off the growing discomfort in my stomach. Why was she here?
Kevin came back over to me, his hand brushing mine for reassurance.
“Are you okay?” he asked, clearly noticing the tension on my face.
“Yeah… just surprised to see Kara here,” I admitted, my voice betraying the unease I felt.
“She’s friends with my sister. I told you about that, remember?” he said, trying to assure me. “She won’t be here for long, I promise.”
But the knot in my stomach wouldn’t loosen. Why would he bring his ex to this special occasion, knowing how uncomfortable it might make me? But I brushed it aside, convincing myself that I was overthinking.
After all, this was supposed to be one of the happiest days of my life.
As the night progressed, the tension grew thicker. Kara didn’t seem to leave the group, laughing and chatting with Kevin’s family as if nothing had ever happened.
I tried to ignore it, focusing on the conversations around me, but the longer she stayed, the more I felt a sense of unease that only increased when Kevin called for everyone’s attention.
He stood up and made a small speech, telling everyone how much he loved his family, how grateful he was for everything, and how much he appreciated all of their support.
My heart skipped a beat, knowing this was the moment.
Kevin had a way of speaking that always made me feel like I was the only person in the room, and tonight was no different.
“I’ve been incredibly lucky in my life,” Kevin said, his voice shaking slightly with emotion, “but the luckiest thing that ever happened to me was meeting Lily.
And I want to spend the rest of my life with her.”
I felt my eyes welling up as I beamed at him. My heart was racing, and I thought for sure this was the moment he would get down on one knee and propose.
Kevin took a deep breath, and then, without warning, turned to me and dropped to one knee.
He held out a small velvet box, the ring sparkling in the light. I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth in disbelief.
“Lily, will you marry me?” he asked, his eyes shining with love and excitement.
My world stopped. I could barely breathe, overwhelmed with joy, and I barely managed to say, “Yes! Yes, of course!”
The guests clapped and cheered, and I could see the tears in Kevin’s eyes as he slipped the ring onto my finger.
But just as I thought this moment would be perfect, it was interrupted.
Kara, standing off to the side with her arms crossed, cleared her throat loudly. Everyone’s attention shifted to her, and the cheerful atmosphere instantly dampened.
“Kevin, I don’t think this is right,” Kara said, her voice laced with an edge that sent a chill down my spine.
The room fell silent. My heart dropped into my stomach, and I felt my pulse quicken. What was happening?
“Excuse me?” Kevin said, his brow furrowing as he stood up from one knee.
“You’re really going to do this in front of everyone?
After everything?” Kara’s voice had grown louder, her eyes darting between Kevin and me. “You didn’t think about how this would affect me?”
The guests exchanged confused glances, not sure what was going on.
I could feel my stomach churn, the room spinning. Kevin and Kara’s tense history was coming to light, and I wasn’t sure what she meant by her words.
“Is there something you’re not telling me?” I finally managed to ask, trying to keep my voice steady.
My hands were shaking, my smile fading as the reality of the situation began to set in.
Kara took a deep breath, shaking her head. “You’re just so naive, Lily.
You really think this is going to work out with Kevin, but you don’t know everything. You don’t know what we had, what he promised me.”
I turned to Kevin, my eyes searching his face for answers. His jaw clenched, his body stiff.
“Kevin?” I whispered, my voice shaking now.
“I… I didn’t think it would come to this,” he said, running his hand through his hair. “Kara, I told you this was over. We’ve been through this. I’m with Lily now. I love her.”
But Kara wasn’t finished. She stepped forward, her gaze fixed on me with a mix of bitterness and sadness.
“You really think this is just some love story, huh? Well, it’s not. Kevin and I… we have a past.
We have something you can’t just erase. And if you think he’s going to stay true to you, you’re fooling yourself.”
The guests were still in stunned silence, unsure of how to react.
I stood there, feeling as though my world had been ripped apart in front of me. Kevin had proposed, but his ex-girlfriend’s words were like a dagger to my heart.
“I’m sorry, Lily,” Kevin said, his voice barely audible. “I didn’t mean for this to happen like this.”
Kara crossed her arms and gave one final glare before turning and walking out of the room, leaving the heavy silence behind her.
