The palliative care room was silent.
Only the heart monitor made faint, irregular beeps—barely audible, like the fading breath of life inside the body of the 82-year-old man.

He had known his diagnosis for a long time: widespread metastases, irreversible damage. The doctors had been honest—he had days left, maybe only hours.
But it wasn’t the fear of death that tormented him—it was the pain of parting.
Every day, he stared out the window and whispered:
— “Richie… Where are you, little one…”
Richie—his old, scruffy, but loyal dog, whom he had once found as a puppy on the side of the road.
They had walked through almost fifteen years together—losing a wife, a son, a home, friends… everything but each other.
That day, as the nurse came to change his IV, the elderly man suddenly grabbed her hand:
— “Let me see Richie…”
“He’s all alone… I can’t leave without holding him one last time.”
The nurse turned pale. Animals were strictly forbidden in patient rooms.
But something stirred in her heart.
She went to the chief doctor.
He looked at her like she was out of her mind:
— “This is a hospital…” Then paused. “But… if it’s truly his last wish…”
Two hours later, a faint bark was heard at the hospital entrance.
The dog was thin, his muzzle graying.
The nurse opened the door to the room—and without hesitation, Richie leapt onto the bed.
He carefully laid down on his owner’s chest, resting his head on his shoulder.
The man whispered:
— “Forgive me… Forgive me for not being there… My sweet boy… Thank you…”
He cried, stroked the dog, kissed his head.
And Richie only whimpered softly, as if to say: “I’m here. I’m with you. Till the end.”
They lay like that for hours. The nurse chose not to disturb them and quietly left the room.
She finished her shift and later returned to check on the elderly patient.
She opened the door—and screamed in horror. 😨😢
When the nurse entered the room closer to evening, she froze at the threshold. Her breath caught.
They were lying just as before. Only now, the heart monitor had gone silent.
The old man had passed away… But in his embrace, with his nose pressed into the man’s neck, lay Richie.
The dog’s heart couldn’t bear the separation.
The last souls they had left on this earth… departed together.
In silence.
In love.
In loyalty.
