When Luca started coming home later and later, I told myself not to worry. “Work is just hectic right now,” he would say, pressing a tired kiss to my forehead. “It’ll calm down soon.”

But soon never came.
I trusted him. We were engaged, planning our wedding, and he had never given me a reason to doubt him. But something about the way he dodged my questions, the way his phone buzzed late at night, left a nagging feeling in my chest.
So, I decided to surprise him.
I left work early, picked up his favorite coffee, and headed straight to his office.
The receptionist gave me a polite but uncertain smile. “Oh, Luca’s in the back,” she said. “You can go right in.”
I walked down the hallway, excitement and nerves battling inside me. What if I was wrong? What if I was about to feel silly for ever doubting him?
I pushed open the door to his office.
And froze.
Luca was sitting on the floor, a little girl curled up in his lap, fast asleep. Papers were scattered around him, but his laptop sat closed on the desk. His jacket was draped over the child, as if he were trying to keep her warm.
I blinked, my mind scrambling to make sense of the scene.
Hearing the door, Luca looked up, his eyes widening. “Elena! What are you doing here?”
I stared at him, then at the girl, then back at him. “What’s going on?” My voice was softer than I expected.
He sighed and gently shifted the little girl, laying her down on a makeshift bed of office cushions. Then he stood, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s not what you think.”
“Oh, really? Because I’m thinking a lot of things right now, Luca.”
He exhaled, then motioned for me to follow him out of the office. We stepped into the hallway, and he closed the door behind us.
“Her name is Ava. She’s my coworker Marina’s daughter. Marina’s a single mom, and lately, she’s been struggling to finish her projects on time. Our boss was threatening to fire her, and I… I couldn’t just watch that happen.”
I stared at him, my heart pounding. “So you’ve been babysitting her kid?”
He nodded. “Yeah. When Marina has to work late, I take care of Ava in my office. I didn’t tell you because… I don’t know. I didn’t want you to think it was weird. Or that I was spending all this time helping another woman.”
I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. “Luca…”
His shoulders tensed. “Are you mad?”
I shook my head, a slow smile creeping onto my lips. “No. Just… surprised.”
He gave me a sheepish look. “So, you’re not about to call off the wedding?”
I rolled my eyes and pulled him into a hug. “No, you idiot. But next time, tell me. I would have helped.”
He laughed softly. “I should have known you’d say that.”
That night, instead of feeling betrayed, I felt something even stronger: love. Because I had just discovered the kind of man Luca truly was—the kind who would stay late, not for himself, but to make sure someone else didn’t lose everything.
And that was the kind of man I wanted to marry.
