I had been looking forward to Ava’s wedding for months. She was my best friend, my rock, the person who had seen me through my worst heartbreak. When her invitation arrived, I didn’t hesitate to RSVP. I was thrilled for her, ready to stand by her side on the happiest day of her life.

But when I arrived at the venue and saw the groom standing at the altar, the world tilted beneath my feet.
It was Adrian.
The man who had shattered me years ago. The man who had lied, cheated, and walked away without a second thought.
And now, he was marrying my best friend.
I barely felt my legs move as I made my way through the crowd, my pulse pounding in my ears. Had Ava known? Had she kept this from me? Was this some kind of twisted joke?
I found my seat, my hands gripping the program so tightly it crumpled. Guests chattered around me, oblivious to the storm raging inside me. When the music started and Ava appeared at the end of the aisle, radiant in her gown, my stomach twisted into knots.
I couldn’t do this. I couldn’t sit here and watch her marry the man who had once torn me apart.
But before I could slip away, her eyes met mine. She smiled, a warm, glowing smile, completely unaware of the agony tightening my chest.
I stayed.
The ceremony felt like an eternity. Every vow Adrian spoke was a lie in my ears. Every promise he made to Ava was one I had once believed.
When the officiant pronounced them husband and wife, the applause felt deafening. My heart was in my throat as I made my way toward the exit, desperate for air.
But before I could leave, a voice stopped me.
“Sophia?”
I turned, and there she was—Ava, beaming, her hands clutching mine. “I’m so glad you made it!”
I forced a smile. “Of course.”
“I can’t wait for you to meet Adrian properly.” She laughed. “I know you’ve probably seen him around, but—”
“Ava.” My voice cracked. “I know him.”
She frowned. “What do you mean?”
I swallowed hard, every instinct screaming at me to stay silent. But I couldn’t. Not now.
“We were together,” I said quietly. “Years ago.”
Her face went pale. “What?”
I nodded, my throat thick. “And it didn’t end well.”
Ava glanced toward Adrian, who was laughing with guests, completely oblivious to the conversation happening just feet away. When she turned back to me, her expression had changed.
“Tell me everything.”
So I did.
I told her about the lies. The betrayal. The way he had vanished without warning, leaving me in pieces. I watched as realization dawned in her eyes, as she pieced together the inconsistencies, the moments she had ignored, the gut feelings she had pushed aside.
Her hands trembled as she gripped my arm. “I need to talk to him.”
I hesitated. “Ava, are you sure?”
She nodded, her jaw tight. “I can’t go into this blind.”
She walked away before I could stop her, making a beeline for Adrian. I watched as she pulled him aside, her expression unreadable. He laughed at first, shaking his head, but as she spoke, his posture stiffened. His face twisted into something darker, something defensive.
Then Ava did something I never expected.
She took off her ring and set it on the table between them.
Gasps rippled through the crowd as she turned and walked away, her dress billowing behind her.
And Adrian? He just stood there, speechless, watching his bride disappear.
I exhaled, my heart hammering.
Ava found me minutes later, her face pale but determined. “Come on,” she said, gripping my hand. “Let’s get out of here.”
And together, we walked away from the wedding that never should have happened.
