When I first moved in with Jade, I thought I had found the perfect roommate. She was friendly, responsible, and claimed to love animals. So, when I had to leave town for a work conference, I had no doubts about leaving my golden retriever, Max, in her care. “Don’t worry, Liv,” she assured me. “I’ll take great care of him.”

I left feeling confident that Max was in good hands. But when I returned four days later, my apartment was eerily quiet. No excited barking. No wagging tail. My heart dropped. “Jade? Where’s Max?” I called out, my voice shaking.
Jade emerged from her room, looking nervous. “Oh, hey! You’re back early!” she said, forcing a smile. My stomach twisted. Something was wrong. “Where is Max?” I demanded.
She hesitated before blurting out, “I—I don’t know. He got out two days ago. I was going to tell you, but I thought he’d come back.”
I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me. “What do you mean he ‘got out’? How could you lose my dog and not tell me?” My voice rose, my hands trembling.
Jade stammered, making excuse after excuse. She had left the door open for “just a second.” She thought he’d be fine. She had been “too busy” to look for him. Fury boiled inside me. My best friend was gone, and she had done nothing.
I didn’t waste another second listening to her pathetic explanations. I grabbed my phone and started searching. I posted on every lost pet forum, plastered Max’s pictures all over social media, and even called local shelters. Then, I walked out to search for him myself.
Hours passed. Then a full day. My heart ached as I imagined Max lost, scared, or worse. But I refused to give up.
On the second day, a message popped up on my post: “I think I saw this dog at a pet adoption event downtown.” My hands shook as I dialed the number.
It turned out Jade hadn’t just “lost” Max—she had given him away.
A rescue group had picked him up after a “concerned citizen” dropped him off, claiming he was abandoned. That citizen? Jade.
Rage surged through me, but I forced myself to stay calm as I rushed to the adoption event. And there he was—my Max, sitting inside a kennel, looking sad and confused. The moment he saw me, he leaped up, his tail wagging furiously.
I fell to my knees, hugging him tightly. “You’re coming home, buddy,” I whispered, tears streaming down my face.
The rescue workers were shocked when I told them what happened. They immediately released Max to me and advised me to report Jade for pet abandonment. And you can bet I did.
The moment I walked back into the apartment, Jade knew she was caught. “Liv, I—”
“Save it,” I snapped. “You’re a liar, and you’re moving out today.”
She tried to protest, but I was done listening. I gave her until the end of the day to pack her things and leave. And just like that, I cut her out of my life.
Max is safe, and I learned a harsh but valuable lesson—never trust someone with what you love until they’ve truly earned it. Jade thought she could get away with betraying me, but karma had other plans. And I have no regrets.
