After months of silence and emotional distance, I finally decided it was time to return some of the things my ex, Max, had left at my place.
I knew I didn’t owe him anything, but I figured it would be better to get it over with.
I had packed up his things, organized his old clothes, his books, and a few keepsakes that he’d left behind, and now it was time to drop them off and move on for good.

I didn’t want to see him. I had no intention of staying long—just a quick drop-off and that would be it.
After everything that had happened between us, there was no need for any long goodbyes or awkward conversations.
I drove over to his place, heart pounding as I pulled up to the familiar street.
The house looked the same as when we lived there together—neatly manicured lawn, bright white trim, and the small garden we had planted together in the backyard.
It felt strange to be back, like I was visiting someone else’s home.
I took a deep breath before knocking on his door. I had been expecting to be greeted by Max, but when the door opened, I found myself staring at a face I hadn’t seen in years—my twin sister, Lily.
My breath caught in my throat. “Lily?” I whispered, unable to believe my eyes. “What are you doing here?”
Lily stood frozen for a moment, her expression unreadable. Her long, dark hair cascaded over her shoulders in soft waves, and she wore a familiar, almost nervous smile.
It was the kind of smile I hadn’t seen in a long time, one that made me feel a strange mix of confusion and anger.
She looked exactly the same—except, of course, for the fact that she was standing in the doorway of my ex’s house.
“I—uh, I’m here visiting,” she said, her voice faltering as she shifted uncomfortably. “I didn’t know you were coming by.”
I felt a knot form in my stomach. “Visiting? What’s going on, Lily? Why are you here?”
She hesitated, her eyes darting to the side as if she was trying to find the right words.
“I… I didn’t want to tell you this way, but I’ve been seeing Max. We’ve been… spending time together.”
I stood there, stunned. The words didn’t register at first, and I had to take a step back to process what she was saying. “What do you mean, ‘spending time together’? You’re seeing him?”
Lily nodded slowly, her gaze dropping to the ground. “Yes, I am. I didn’t know how to tell you, and I didn’t want to hurt you.”
I felt the blood drain from my face. Max and Lily? My twin sister, the person I had shared everything with, was involved with my ex.
The man I had loved, the man who had broken my heart, was now with the one person I thought I could always trust.
“You’ve been seeing him behind my back?” I asked, my voice trembling with a mix of disbelief and betrayal. “For how long, Lily?”
“Not long,” she said softly, avoiding my gaze. “A couple of months. It just… happened. I didn’t want to hurt you. I never meant for it to go this far.”
I was speechless. My mind raced as I tried to make sense of what was happening.
Lily and I had always been close—too close, sometimes. We shared everything. So how could she keep something this important from me?
“You didn’t think I’d want to know?” I managed to say, my voice barely above a whisper.
“You didn’t think I had a right to know you were seeing the person I just broke up with?”
“I didn’t want to hurt you,” she repeated, her voice breaking. “I thought it would be better if you didn’t find out. I didn’t know how to tell you.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at her, feeling the weight of the betrayal crashing over me.
This was my twin sister—my other half. How could she do this? How could she get involved with Max after everything that had happened between him and me?
“I can’t believe this, Lily,” I said, my voice barely a whisper as I shook my head. “I thought you were my best friend. How could you do this to me?”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears, and she took a step toward me. “I’m sorry. I really am.
I never meant for it to hurt you. It just happened, and I didn’t know how to handle it. I never wanted to lose you.”
I took a step back, feeling overwhelmed by everything that had just been revealed.
The house, once filled with the echoes of our shared memories, suddenly felt cold and unfamiliar.
I wanted to leave. I didn’t want to hear any more excuses.
“I think you should go,” I said, the words coming out more harshly than I intended.
“I can’t talk about this right now.”
Lily’s face crumpled as she nodded, clearly torn. “I’m sorry. I really am.”
I stood there, watching her turn away, before she walked back into the house, leaving me standing on the doorstep.
I felt a coldness settle over me. How could I have been so blind? How had I not seen this coming?
Max’s betrayal had already broken me, but this was a betrayal that cut deeper than I could have ever imagined.
My sister, the one person I trusted more than anyone, had crossed a line I never thought she would.
I stood there for a long moment, frozen in shock, before I finally turned and walked away. I didn’t know what the future held for Lily and me, or for Max, but one thing was clear—I was done.
I couldn’t be around either of them anymore.
I had lost both of them.
