It was supposed to be a regular Wednesday evening, but everything changed the moment I opened my husband’s phone. Leo had always been secretive with his phone, but I never thought much of it. Until that evening, when I found the texts.

I was sitting in the living room, flipping through a book, when Leo went to take a shower. His phone was lying on the coffee table, and I noticed the screen was unlocked. I picked it up absentmindedly, thinking I’d check the weather. But as soon as I opened the messages, my stomach dropped.
There, in a string of texts, was a conversation between Leo and a woman named “Evelyn.” The texts were not at all professional or innocent. They were intimate. They were full of promises and flirtations, and I felt my heart shatter as I read through them.
“Can’t wait to see you tonight,” one of the messages read.
“Me neither. I’ve missed you,” another one followed.
It didn’t take long for me to put the pieces together. I was sick to my stomach as I realized Leo was having an affair. I had no idea who Evelyn was, but I knew I needed to confront Leo immediately.
When he came out of the shower, I was sitting on the couch, holding his phone in my hands, my face pale.
“Leo… who is Evelyn?” I asked, my voice trembling with anger and betrayal.
He froze, his face draining of color. “Emma, I… I didn’t mean for it to happen.”
“What the hell is going on, Leo?” I shouted, standing up. “You’ve been seeing someone behind my back, and you haven’t even had the decency to tell me?”
“I’m so sorry,” he said, sitting down and rubbing his temples. “I never wanted to hurt you. It just… it just happened. We’ve been talking for a while, and I thought… I thought it was harmless.”
I could barely hear him as the rage inside me exploded. “Who is she, Leo?” I demanded. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you lie to my face every day?”
He hesitated before speaking again. “It’s my… It’s your Aunt Evelyn.”
I froze. I couldn’t process his words. My Aunt Evelyn? My own aunt? The woman who had been a part of my life for as long as I could remember? The woman who had attended every holiday, every family gathering? It didn’t make sense.
“Evelyn?” I repeated, barely able to comprehend the situation. “You’ve been sleeping with my aunt?”
Leo looked away, clearly ashamed. “I never meant for this to happen, Emma. It was a mistake. I never wanted to hurt you.”
I felt like the room was spinning. I couldn’t understand. My own flesh and blood. The woman who had been there for me, who had comforted me during hard times, was now the woman Leo had been secretly seeing behind my back.
“Why?” I asked, my voice shaky. “Why would you do this? Why my aunt?”
Leo stood up, pacing nervously. “It just happened, Emma. We had a connection, a bond. We’ve been close for a while, and when you weren’t around, she was there for me. I never thought it would go this far, but I… I fell for her.”
Tears welled up in my eyes. I wanted to scream, to lash out, to do anything that would release the anger I felt bubbling up inside me. But all I could do was stand there in shock, trying to wrap my head around what Leo had just told me.
“You’ve betrayed me in the worst way possible,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “Not only have you been unfaithful, but you’ve done it with my aunt, Leo. My own family.”
Leo stood there, his face full of guilt, but it did nothing to soothe the rage inside me. I felt like I was suffocating, drowning in a sea of disbelief.
Later that evening, I decided I needed answers. I couldn’t just let this sit in my heart. I had to confront Evelyn. As painful as it was, I needed to know the truth—why she had done this, how long it had been going on, and what it meant for our family.
I drove to her house with a heavy heart, my hands clenched on the steering wheel. The thought of seeing her, of hearing the truth from her lips, filled me with dread. But I had to do it. I couldn’t let this betrayal fester in silence.
When I arrived at her house, I barely had the strength to knock on the door. But I did. And when Evelyn answered, her face seemed to freeze when she saw me.
“Emma?” she asked, her voice full of hesitation.
“Aunt Evelyn,” I said, trying to steady my breath. “We need to talk.”
I stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, my emotions threatening to burst. Evelyn looked at me with a mix of guilt and fear, but she didn’t speak.
“I know everything,” I said, the words slipping out with a cold edge. “I know about you and Leo.”
For a moment, there was complete silence. Then Evelyn sat down slowly, tears welling up in her eyes. “Emma, I… I’m so sorry. I never meant for you to find out like this. I never wanted to hurt you.”
“Then why did you do it?” I demanded, my voice shaking with anger. “How could you betray me like this? You’re family. You were supposed to be the one I could trust!”
Evelyn’s face crumpled, and she began to sob. “I don’t know, Emma. I don’t know. I never planned for it to go this far. It just happened, and I couldn’t stop it.”
“Why him?” I asked, my voice hoarse. “Why my husband?”
She wiped her eyes, still unable to meet my gaze. “Leo… Leo was always there. He was kind to me when I needed someone, and one thing led to another. I never meant to hurt you, I swear. I’ve been carrying this guilt with me every day.”
The conversation went on for hours, and I left her house with a mix of anger and heartbreak. Evelyn was no longer the woman I had trusted. She was just another person who had broken my heart.
The next few weeks were a blur of emotion and self-reflection. I couldn’t make sense of the betrayal. My husband, my aunt—the two people I had loved and trusted the most—had both destroyed everything we had built.
Eventually, Leo and I separated. I couldn’t stay with someone who had lied to me and betrayed me in such a profound way. As for Evelyn, she and I never spoke again.
