My Mother-In-Law Tried to Set My Husband Against Me, But Her Scheme Backfired in a Big Way

When I married Jason, I thought I had found my perfect partner. He was kind, loving, and always stood by my side. What I didn’t expect was the battle I’d have to fight with his mother, Eleanor.

From the moment Jason and I got engaged, Eleanor made it clear that she didn’t approve of me. She never said it outright, but her actions spoke volumes. She’d “accidentally” forget to invite me to family gatherings, criticize my cooking, and constantly remind Jason of how “perfect” his ex-girlfriend, Vanessa, had been.

At first, I tried to be the bigger person. “She’ll come around,” I told myself. But I quickly realized that Eleanor wasn’t just being difficult—she was actively trying to turn Jason against me.

It started with little things. She would call Jason while he was at work and plant seeds of doubt. “I don’t want to interfere, dear, but I just feel like Lily doesn’t appreciate everything you do for her.”

Then, she became bolder. “Jason, I’m worried. She seems controlling. Are you sure she loves you the way you love her?”

Jason always reassured me that he didn’t believe her, but I could tell it was getting to him. He started asking me questions he had never cared about before. “Why don’t you spend more time with my mom?” “Are you avoiding her?” “She thinks you don’t like her—what’s going on?”

At first, I thought I was being paranoid. Maybe it was all just harmless meddling. But then, Eleanor pulled her boldest stunt yet.

One evening, Jason came home looking serious. “We need to talk,” he said.

I felt a pit in my stomach. “What’s wrong?”

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Mom told me something… upsetting. She said you’ve been complaining about my family behind my back.”

I blinked. “What?”

“She said you told her that you hate visiting, that you think my family is ‘too much,’ and that you don’t want our future kids to be around them.”

I burst out laughing. “Jason, you know that’s not true. Your mom is making this up.”

“I want to believe you,” he said, looking uncertain.

That’s when I knew I had to prove, once and for all, what Eleanor was up to.

I came up with a plan. The next time Eleanor called Jason, I was ready. I set my phone to record (just for proof) and put her on speaker. Jason sat next to me, listening.

“Jason, sweetie,” she cooed, not knowing I was there. “I need to warn you about Lily. I heard her talking to a friend about how she’s only with you because of your money. She said she’s waiting for you to buy her a house before she decides if she’ll stay married.”

Jason’s jaw clenched. “Mom, are you sure you heard that?”

“Of course! I just didn’t want to tell you sooner because I knew it would hurt you.”

That’s when I spoke up. “Wow, Eleanor, that’s funny. Because I’ve never once said anything like that. And now Jason knows it.”

Silence.

Then, she stammered, “I—well—I must have misheard.”

“No, Mom,” Jason said, his voice sharp. “You didn’t mishear. You made it up. I can’t believe you would try to sabotage my marriage like this.”

She tried to backtrack, but the damage was done. Jason finally saw the truth. He hung up, turned to me, and said, “I am so sorry.”

From that day on, Jason set firm boundaries with his mother. No more daily phone calls. No more interference in our marriage. And as for Eleanor? She sulked, of course, but she knew she had lost.

As for me, I finally got what I wanted—peace. And the best part? Jason and I became stronger than ever.

Eleanor’s little scheme didn’t just fail—it backfired in the best way possible.
